Markka banknotes and coins in circulation

Year-end figures

Returns of markka banknotes and coins started during 2001, clearly before the changeover to euro cash. The majority of markka banknotes (about three quarters) were exchanged into euro cash during the official currency exchange period in January–February 2002. By the end of 2002, well over 94% of markka banknotes and almost 70% of markka coins had been returned to the Bank of Finland.

The rate of return for markka banknotes at the end of 2003 was 96% and for markka coins 73%. At the end of 2005, there was still EUR 236 million worth of markka banknotes and coins that had not been returned to the central bank. However, the most part of unreturned markka cash is likely to remain in the hands of numismatists and other collectors.
