The Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Finland, Matti Vanhala, will be on sick leave until June this year. Vanhala was diagnosed with a superficial cancer of the urinary bladder in 1999. The treatment of the disease has not hindered Governor Vanhala from performing his official duties. In order to prevent the spread of the cancer, Vanhala has undergone surgery today.

During Governor Vanhala's absence, his duties will be performed by Deputy Governor Matti Louekoski. Mr Louekoski will also act as a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank during Vanhala's absence.
