DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Alejandro Riaño (City, University of London) - Unpacking the Twin Peaks of the Export Intensity Distribution Co-author: Fabrice Defever (University of Lille) Abstract: A key element of the export-led growth industrial development pursued by many developing and emerging market countries over the last four decades is the promotion of firms that export most of their output. We propose an indirect method to gauge the impact of export promotion policies on aggregate welfare, leveraging information contained in the distribution of export intensity---the share of an exporting firm's sales accounted for by exports. To do so, we unpack the ‘natural’ and policy-driven variation that determines the shape the distribution of export intensity across countries. Using accessible firm-level data, we estimate the parameters that characterize the distribution of export intensity that would have prevailed in each country without policy distortions. Comparing the actual distribution in a country with the undistorted counterfactual allows us to quantify the effect that a broad range of export-led policy instruments that have been widely employed across many developing and emerging markets. =0D=0A Online BOFIT seminars are open to all researchers interested in the subjects covered.
