DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:BOFIT Seminar - Jan Fidrmuc (Université de Lille) - Violence and Socio-economic Outcomes of Ukrainian Refugees in Poland =0D=0A Abstract We combine data surveying Ukrainian refugees in Cracow, Poland, with a representative sample of Ukrainian population surveyed by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS Omnibus) in December 2023 to study the determinants of happiness, trust and self-declared health, and to shed light on the self-selection into becoming a refugee in Poland. We find that refugees leave preemptively, not after having been affected by the war. Leaving is costly: refugees are less well off than stayers, and they suffer a happiness penalty. The happiness and, to a lesser extent, generalized trust and health of refugees and stayers alike, are negatively impacted by direct experiences of conflict and violence. =0D=0A Online BOFIT seminars are open to all researchers interested in the subjects covered. Those wishing to attend a seminar are kindly asked to register in advance, by filling in the Online Registration Form . =0D=0A The registration for the seminar is open until 9:00 am the day of the seminar. You will receive a link to join the seminar by email at the latest one hour before the seminar is scheduled to begin. =0D=0A
