Puhe Pentti Hakkaraisen läksiäisvastaanotolla

Dear friends, hyvät ystävät, Pentti,
I am so happy that so many foreign and Finnish guests have come here today. Pentti is making history.
In two weeks he will be the first member in the history of the Bank of Finland who has served all three 5-year mandates as a board member and after this all is not retiring. The retirement age is still far from him and will go even further.
Pentti has been a great colleague. Out of his many qualities I just mention three.
First, he is always available. Whatever is the issue or how difficult it could be, he never runs away. He gives his support even when you still hesitate to ask.
If you need a stronger defense, he can play libero. If you need attack, he can make goals. His 24/7 availability has been a huge asset for the bank. And to have such a deputy governor is a rare privilege. In theory, this could sometimes be a problem for Hannele.
Second, Pentti is curious, he wants to know more and he wants to learn. Curiosity is an important quality for a creative working environment. People must be ready to make questions. Often those which look simple, are the most difficult.
Third, one issue dominates in his mind: how to improve efficiency and productivity. How to get more out of our resources? Could we do this all by spending less? And here Pentti does not give up. Never.
Hyvät ystävät,
Penalla on harvinainen ura jo nyt takanaan. Hän oli vastannut yhden suuyrityksen rahoituksesta ja ollut kahden suuren pankin johtotehtävissä ennen kuin tuli Suomen Pankkiin. Suomen Pankissa hän on ollut nyt 15 vuotta.
Tällä taustalla on joskus jouduttu siihen, että Pena oli asiassa johtokunnan aktiivisin jäsen ja samalla sen yksityiskohdat parhaiten tunteva virkamies. Siinä saattoi olla ajoittain muilla mukana pysymistä tai kestämistä.
Haluan kiittää Penttiä myös lukuisista keskusteluhetkistä viimeisen 12 vuoden aikana. Maailma on ollut myllerryksessä ja on ollut tarve pysähtyä, edes puoleksi tunniksi. On istuttu alas, otettu cappuccino, ehkä poltettu pieni sikarikin, silloin kuin se on ollut laillista. Ja keskusteltu. Niitä hetkiä jään kaipaamaan.

When people leave an institution we invite friends and colleagues to a reception to say good-bye.
But Pentti is not leaving. He is starting a new career as a European member in the Single Supervisory Mechanism of the ECB. Pentti had a unanimous support for this task in the ECB Governing Council. I am sure he will do a great job in Frankfurt.
So we don´t say good-bye, hyvästi, we say as the French do: au revoir, goodbye only until we meet again, au revoir, näkemiin, näkemisiin.
