On an autumnal Wednesday evening, 19 October 2011, 1,800 invited guests and staff members of the European Central Bank (ECB) came together to say goodbye to the retiring President of the ECB, Jean-Claude Trichet. Mr Trichet was the second President of the European Central Bank, succeeding Wim Duisenberg. The third presidency will be undertaken by Mario Draghi from Italy.

Frankfurt’s Alte Oper house was the venue of eloquent speeches held during that evening by such guests as former and current ministers and central bank governors, as well as heads of the European Commission, the European Council and the Eurogroup.
