In the nationwide preliminary challenge, held at the schools on 18 January 2012, the participants were required, among other things, to assess price developments in the housing market and to consider the effects on housing supply and demand from reducing the tax deductibility of interest payments on home mortgage loans. The finals will be held in Helsinki on 1–2 March 2012, when one of the 10 finalists will be selected winner of the Economic Guru challenge 2012.

This year is already the 15th time that senior high school pupils test their capabilities in economic issues. The challenge is a joint project of the Bank of Finland, the Federation of Finnish Financial Services and the Association of History and Civics Teachers (HYOL ry). Economic Guru is also supported by the Financial Journalists’ Association and the Union of Finnish Upper Secondary School Students.

A young person’s life is full of decisions related to economic matters in many different ways. In launching this joint competitive event, the organisers want to promote young people’s economic qualifications and provide them with tools to understand the consequences of choices related to their own finances.
