Euro Coin Conference brought large array of experts to Helsinki
Cooperation internationally is essential for the euro area’s cash supply and the prevention of counterfeiting. The first ever Helsinki Euro Coin Conference, hosted on 5–6 February 2026 by the Bank of Finland, brought an array of international experts to Helsinki. The conference focused specifically on euro coins and included presentations by experts in cash supply, coin production, crime prevention and legislation from across Europe.
The conference was opened by Jussi Kangas, Head of Cash at the Bank of Finland. In his opening remarks he emphasised the importance of continuous international cooperation to ensure that counterfeiting remains well under control in the future too.
The first day of the event included presentations on the role of the European Technical and Scientific Centre (ETSC) in analysing euro coins and on the work of the Royal Dutch Mint. In addition, a representative from Italy’s police authorities explained about the prevention of coin counterfeiting, and the audience discovered more about the coin sorting process from a representative of Spain’s central bank. The conference continued the following day with a presentation on the EU legislative framework by a European Commission representative, and talks by experts from the central banks of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland.
In all, the Helsinki Euro Coin Conference provided a wide-ranging overview covering counterfeit prevention and the different lifecycle stages of euro coins. Smoothly functioning international cooperation remains essential and should be further developed in the future.
