Year-end figures

Markka banknotes and coins could be returned to the Bank of Finland and exchanged for euro cash until 29 February 2012. By the end of the exchange period, unredeemed markka banknotes and coins amounted to 1,626 million markkaa, corresponding to EUR 273 million.

Of the unredeemed total, markka banknotes and coins, including commemorative coins, accounted for 708.8 million and 917.2 million markkaa, respectively. Of the total unredeemed cash, markka and penni coins accounted for 586.1 million markkaa.

The majority of markka banknotes (about three-fourths) were exchanged for euro during the official currency exchange period January–February 2002. By the end of 2002, well over 94% of markka banknotes and almost 70% of markka coins had been returned to the Bank of Finland.

The figures show the situation at the end of the year, apart from those for 2012, which are for the end of June, when all returned markkaa had been counted. EUR 1 = FIM 5.94573.
