BOFIT Seminar - Jan Fidrmuc (Université de Lille) - Violence and Socio-economic Outcomes of Ukrainian Refugees in Poland

Abstract
We combine data surveying Ukrainian refugees in Cracow, Poland, with a representative sample of Ukrainian population surveyed by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS Omnibus) in December 2023 to study the determinants of happiness, trust and self-declared health, and to shed light on the self-selection into becoming a refugee in Poland. We find that refugees leave preemptively, not after having been affected by the war. Leaving is costly: refugees are less well off than stayers, and they suffer a happiness penalty. The happiness and, to a lesser extent, generalized trust and health of refugees and stayers alike, are negatively impacted by direct experiences of conflict and violence.
