BOFIT Seminar - Jan Fidrmuc (Université de Lille) - Violence and Socio-economic Outcomes of Ukrainian Refugees in Poland

We combine data surveying Ukrainian refugees in Cracow, Poland, with a representative sample of Ukrainian population surveyed by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS Omnibus) in December 2023 to study the determinants of happiness, trust and self-declared health, and to shed light on the self-selection into becoming a refugee in Poland. We find that refugees leave preemptively, not after having been affected by the war. Leaving is costly: refugees are less well off than stayers, and they suffer a happiness penalty. The happiness and, to a lesser extent, generalized trust and health of refugees and stayers alike, are negatively impacted by direct experiences of conflict and violence.

Online BOFIT seminars are open to all researchers interested in the subjects covered. Those wishing to attend a seminar are kindly asked to register in advance, by filling in the Online Registration Form.

The registration for the seminar is open until 9:00 am the day of the seminar. You will receive a link to join the seminar by email at the latest one hour before the seminar is scheduled to begin.
